Africa Unity Square

Africa Unity Square (Jason Moyo Avenue, Harare) – this square was formerly known as Cecil Square (named after Cecil John Rhodes). This was the spot where colonial Harare was founded in September 1890 (which was named at the time Salisbury – a name that stayed until the country’s independence in 1980). This square got its current name in 1988 to commemorate the unification of the country’s two main political parties (and one-time armed guerrilla movements): ZANU-PF and ZAPU.
